Kinky Boots: About the Theater

A show full of flash and glitz like Kinky Boots requires a unique performance space, and the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, located at 302 West 45th Street in New York City’s Theatre District, certainly does not disappoint. The space was originally named the Martin Beck theatre, as it was designed by architect G. Albert Lansburgh for the vaudeville promoter of the same name. Its premiere performance was Madame Pompadour, opening to the public on November 11, 1924, and was designed specifically to be the most opulent theatre of its time. With a seating capacity of 1,424, the space also boasts dressing rooms sizable enough to accommodate 200 actors.

Jujamcyn Theatres purchased the space directly from the Beck family in 1965, and it remains one of the five theatres owned and operated by Jujamcyn. In June of 2003, the theatre was renamed for Al Hirschfeld, the famous caricaturist who is best known for his drawings of Broadway celebrities. The space reopened with a revival of the musical Wonderful Town in November of that year.

A number of big name celebrities have played on the Hirschfeld stage, including Elizabeth Taylor in The Little Foxes and Daniel Radcliffe in the latest revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. It has housed a variety of big musical productions including Man of La Mancha, Into the Woods, Annie, The Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls, and Kiss Me, Kate. Now, Kinky Boot makes its home in the Hirschfeld, and is continuing to enjoy a long, prosperous run.
