Central Park transforms into Britain in the eighth century B.C. as the famous Shakespeare in the Park presents a production of King Lear. Widely known as one of Shakespeare’s best plays, this tragedy centers around the aging king of Britain, King Lear (played by John Lithgow,) who is stepping down from the throne and dividing his kingdom. Before he does so, he puts his three daughters to the test to see how much they love him, and in doing so he feels that his favorite and youngest daughter, Cordelia, betrays him. He then proceeds to disown her, so she flees to France to marry their king without the blessing of her father. After his other two daughters begin to undermine him in a greedy rage, he realizes he has made a mistake and begins to go insane. Cordelia eventually attempts to save her father with the French army, but they fail to defeat the English and both she and King Lear are captured.
