Wicked: About the Creators
From L. Frank Baum’s beloved books, to the classic film, to the novel that re-imagined the story, and finally to a Broadway stage, the witches of Oz have a long creative history. Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the spitfire with the emerald skin that grows up to be the wicked witch of the west, and Galinda, the perky, popular blond who becomes the good witch of the north. It is a story of friendship and making the right choices for yourself, and it has bewitched audiences the world over.
Based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked was created by composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz and book writer Winnie Holzman. Stephen Schwartz has had a long and impressive career in theatre, penning such classics as Pippin and Godspell, but he also wrote lyrics for such Disney classics as Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. In 2009, Schwartz was elected to be the President of the Dramatists Guild of America, a position which he still holds today.
Winnie Holzman is a prominent dramatist, screenwriter, and TV writer, best known for her creation of the angsty teen drama My So-Called Life, starring the young Claire Danes and Jared Leto. She also wrote for such shows as The Wonder Years and Thirtysomething, and has enjoyed an acting career on top of it all.
Wicked has gone on to win, and be nominated for, an array of Tony Awards and Drama Desk Awards, the creators took home the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book of a Musical, and Best Lyrics. A film adaptation of the musical has been in the works since 2004, and the producers have allegedly asked book writer Winnie Holzman to write the screenplay as well. Hopefully we will all be able to enjoy a film version of this fantastic musical in the not-too-distant future!
