Anastasia: About the Creators

Inspired by the 1997 Fox animated feature, as well as the 1956 film starring Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner, the Broadway hit Anastasia transports audiences from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past.

Directed by Darko Tresnjak, who nabbed a Tony Award in 2014 for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, the show features opulent settings, dazzling costumes and a soaring score that includes the song favorites from the hit animated film.

Songwriters Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, who penned the tunes for the animated film and earned an Oscar nomination for the popular anthem “Journey to the Past,” reprise their songwriting duties here.

The longtime playwright Terrence McNally handled the all-new book writing for Anastasia. McNally’s award-winning Broadway resume includes such shows as Ragtime, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, Love! Valour! Compassion! and Master Class — to name a few. He has picked up four Tony and three Drama Desk Awards along the way.

Ahrens, Flaherty and McNally had previously collaborated on the Tony-winning musical Ragtime.

Since its debut in April 2017, Anastasia has gone on to win, and be nominated for, a handful of Tony Awards, Drama League Awards and Drama Desk Awards.

At the Tony Awards, Mary Beth Peil was nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as the Dowager Empress. Anastasia was also nominated for Best Costume Design. Linda Cho earned the nod for the production's glamorous gowns and ragged Russian street clothes.
