5 Celebrities Who Should Star on Broadway Right Now

Shawn Mendes in 'Dear Evan Hansen,' anyone?

With singers like Australian heartthrob Cody Simpson and Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams headed to Broadway this season, we have concocted a list of five celebrities who should lace up their dancing shoes and head to the Theatre District next.

Read on and decide if you agree – or disagree – with our choices!

Nick Jonas in Kinky Boots
This month, the Jonas Brother himself surprised audiences at New York’s Elsie Fest by jumping onstage to sing “Brotherhood of Man” with Darren Criss. Jonas’ sultry vocals reminded us of the pop star’s last stint on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Since Jonas has not appeared on Broadway since 2012, the time has come for him to return to the stage that gave him his start, years before the Jonas Brothers were playing sold-out tours. With Kinky Boots reaching a closing date this spring, we think Nick Jonas would make a perfect, “final” Charlie Price at the Al Hirshfield Theatre.

Zendaya in Mean Girls
The multitalented actor is no stranger to being a triple threat; Zendaya hit the mainstream starring alongside Bella Thorne in the Disney Channel Original Series Shake It Up. Last year, she wowed audiences as a high-flying trapeze artist in the musical film The Greatest Showman. Her pitch-perfect vocals and fierce acting choices make Zendaya our vote for the first replacement of head “Plastic” Regina George in Mean Girls.

Chance the Rapper in Hamilton
We are itching for this Chicago native to take the Broadway stage. The Grammy Award-winning Chance the Rapper has masterfully taken the music scene by storm, making him the 2017 Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards. Truthfully, we are ready to see this talent in any role in Hamilton, from John Laurens/Philip Hamilton to Aaron Burr or even Alexander Hamilton himself.

Shawn Mendes in Dear Evan Hansen
Dear Shawn Mendes: we need you to make your Broadway debut sooner rather than later. The “Lost in Japan” singer has just the voice and vibe that we picture for a future casting of Connor Murphy in Dear Evan Hansen. The chart-topping singer-songwriter has plenty of time to make his Broadway appearance, with future tours and music already in the works.

Liza Koshy in The Play That Goes Wrong
At only 22 years old, Liza Koshy has already solidified herself as a brilliant voice in comedy, through her self-made YouTube and Vine careers. In addition, Koshy is the executive producer, co-creator and lead actor in the new YouTube Premium show, Liza on Demand. With her charm and comedic timing, Koshy would excel at any role in The Play That Goes Wrong, the humorous hit that utilizes wit and physical humor to create an unforgettable audience experience.
