From teen romances to cult favorites

Mean Girls, Clueless and Heathers are just a couple of high school movies that have hit Broadway and Off-Broadway. With new musicals based on movies popping up every couple of months – including, this Broadway season, Beetlejuice and Tootsie – we’re rounding up 5 high school movies that we think would be great onstage.

The Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club is the high school movie to end all high school movies. The brain, athlete, basket case and criminal make the perfect group! These characters collectively represent every type of high schooler, from every walk of life. We all have at least one character we can relate to, and music would only elevate the story.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is arguably one of the most iconic movies of the 20th century. It’s a legacy film, and today is referenced in nearly every teen movie you see. It changed the way we watched movies, and has the potential to change the way we interact with musicals. With the right cast and music, it could easily be the best musical based on a film. Starring someone like Andrew Barth Feldman, Roman Banks or Mateo Ferro in the title role, it could be amazing!

Napoleon Dynamite

Heck yes, we’d vote for Napoleon Dynamite to head to Broadway! No one has displayed moves as ice-cold as Napoleon’s since the movie premiered in 2004. Napoleon Dynamite and its disco-loving title character have become a cult 2000s favorite, and the musical would definitely have a strong audience.

The Fault in Our Stars

Even with more and more high school movies being turned into musicals, we rarely see the high school love stories. The Fault in Our Stars is one of the best-written young adult novels to get the movie treatment, and it could be the same for the stage. It’s a beautiful, gut-wrenching story could fit well into the current landscape of Broadway.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

It’s time for a coming-of-age musical to hit Broadway! A true coming-of-age musical would be more than timely. With an assemblage of interesting characters and a lead cast of beautifully written people, this movie could be the perfect basis for an ensemble musical piece. Even though it’s set in the ‘90s, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is such a current story that it also lends itself to include a diverse cast of actors. But above all, this story has the ability to be deeply powerful onstage.
