It’s A NYC Holiday Tradition
The first Radio City Christmas Spectacular was presented in 1933, and for three-quarters of a century, this holiday extravaganza has been delighting, so much so, that for many families, attendance has become a yearly tradition. That first Radio City Christmas Spectacular was created by the Music Hall's first stage producer Leon Leonidoff and designer Vincente Minnelli (that’s Liza’s dad). That first show included the “Living Nativity” and the Rockettes in the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.” Each year since, the Christmas show at Radio City has been a cleverly reimagined variation on that original show.

The Spectacle
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is simply that: spectacular. From dazzling special effects and mammoth holiday-inspired scenery, ornate costumes and backdrops, and nonpareil lighting and projections, you are in for a visual treat that stimulates the senses and awakens the holiday spirit in us all. From the moment you set foot inside the theater, you’ll be immersed in a virtual Christmas and winter wonderland. Everything from dancing dolls and toy soldiers to an appearance from Santa Claus himself adds to the magic that spills off of the stage and into the audience at this famed venue (whose Art Deco lobby is a feast of its own). There really is something special about the no-holds barred grandeur of this yearly tradition, and it is particularly gratifying to see the little ones’ eyes light up in response to the color and size of it all.

The Holiday Music
Holiday music always puts us in the yuletide spirit, and at The Radio City Christmas Spectacular there are plenty of beloved songs to sing along to. The singing, the dancing, the lush arrangements of many of your favorite Christmas carols all come together to make this outing a music lover’s dream.  Whether it be a glorious chorus singing “Silent Night” or the Rockette’s tip-tap-tap-dancing to “Jingle Bell Rock,” each installment of the Christmas Spectacular brings back standards of the holiday season and fills that 90-minutes with the joyous strains of holiday melodies.

The Rockettes
One of things that makes a show at Radio City Music Hall a signature event is the inclusion of the famed Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. This precision chorus line of dancers, with their festive costumes and high-kicking legs, have been around since 1925 when they were founded in St. Louis. They joined the famed venue which first opened in 1932. Many will know these leggy artists from their yearly appearance on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Their ability to remain in-sync, execute stunning visual formations, and kick so high with seemingly little effort, have made them legends of the world of dance. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a chance to be awestruck by their abilities, live and in-person.

The Kids
Christmas is a magical time of year, and even more so for kids, who are eager to find presents under the tree. The gift of introducing your child or children to the musical stage is a gift that is going to last longer than any toy or video game. It creates enduring memories and traditions that they will most likely want to continue with their own children when they grow up. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a great way to introduce your kids to the performing arts and give them one of the most precious gifts of all: a life-long love of live theater. Just watch their smiles and their eyes and you will know you have brought some extra-special magic into their holiday season.

The 2019/2020 Radio City Christmas Spectacular will run from Nov. 8, 2019 to Jan. 5, 2020.
