Theater fans, listen up!

BroadwayCon covers an entire weekend – January 26-28 – but there are far more panels than hours in each day. How to decide what to see? We’ve rounded up five unique panels that you don’t want to miss this year at the Javits Center.

Dancing Through Life: The Transition from Dancer to Choreographer
Friday, January 26, at 11am, Hildy Parks Room
New York’s premiere choreographers reveal how they traded auditioning for choreographing. Speakers include legends Joann M. Hunter and Sergio Trujillo, among others.

From Onstage to Online: Broadway Web Series Roundtable
Friday, January 26, at 3pm, Ruth Mitchell Room
It goes without saying that digital media is now integral in the Broadway industry. This panel covers several web series about Broadway and the performing arts, including Submissions Only and Turning the Tables. Web creators Andrew Keenan-Bolger, Andrew Briedis, Ellyn Marie Marsh, and many more will join forces to dissect the successes and challenges of producing a theatrical piece online.

Fan Tan Fantastic: Asian American Representation
Saturday, January 27, at 10am, Hildy Parks Room
A host of Asian American creatives gather on Saturday morning to discuss the Asian American experience both of actors on Broadway and of characters portrayed in shows themselves. Author Erin Quill (Fairy Princess Diaries) hosts this conversation with Ali Ewoldt (The Phantom of the Opera), Raymond J. Lee (Groundhog Day), Shoba Narayan (The Great Comet) and Telly Leung (Aladdin).

Make 'Em Laugh: Character Actors
Saturday, January 27, at 3pm, Vinnette Carroll Room
We all know the strong, plot-centric protagonists who propel the action in a show. But what about the goofy sidekick who steals the audience’s heart in the meantime? Character actors are an impressive breed, honing the ability not only to sing and perform with ease but also to make lasting impressions through comedy. For this panel, expect fan favorite Lesli Margherita joined by Josh Lamon, Todd Buonopane and Michael Gioia.

Journey to the Island: A Celebration of Ahrens and Flaherty
Sunday, January 28, at 11am, MainStage
This season, two musicals on Broadway feature the music and lyrics of composing duo Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty: Anastasia and Once on This Island. In this MainStage panel, several cast members from Ahrens and Flaherty’s works — including Anastasia’s Christy Altomare and Once on This Island’s Hailey Kilgore and Alex Newell — will appear with Julie James, pinpointing the importance of empowered female leads and performing some of their show’s music with audiences. Bonus: Lynn Ahrens herself will also join the discussion to talk about both shows.
