‘The Lightning Thief’ hits Broadway this month

With Percy Jackson and Camp half blood on the Broadway’s horizon – with The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical slated to hit the Great White Way this fall – and Hogwarts bringing the magic more than eight shows a week at Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, we started thinking of other times young adult novels were put onstage. So before the son of Poseidon touches down at the Longacre Theatre this September, we’ve rounded up five young adult novels that have been successfully adapted for the Broadway stage.

Tuck Everlasting
We start at a never-ending story of love, and with one of the most charming leading characters to grace Broadway: Winnie Foster. Based on Natalie Babbit’s 1975 novel by the same name, Tuck made its Broadway debut in 2016. Carolee Carmello, Terrence Mann, Michael Park and Andrew Keenan-Bolger told Winnie’s story of first love in a world where the Tuck family doesn’t age. The show only ran for 39 performance on Broadway, but they left our hearts just as full as the book does.

The Stephen King novel is one of the best known properties in his canon. With the exception of Danny in The Shining and Pennywise in It, there is perhaps no King character more widely recognized than Carrie. Carrie White’s story of innocence and mistrust thrilled and saddened audiences onstage first in 1988. It was last seen on Broadway in 2012, in a revival starring Derek Klena and Christy Altomare.

The Color Purple
“Like a honeybee, like a waterfall, all a part of me!” The color purple is one of the most incredible books-turned-musicals ever. First debuting at the Alliance Theatre in 2005, the Alice Walker classic has been a classic piece of pop culture for decades. Playing Celie is a badge of honor that has been bestowed on actresses like Whoopi Goldberg, LaChanze and Cynthia Erivo (all three of whom are Tony winners).

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
This list wouldn’t be complete without Harry Potter and the Wizarding World. The Granger-Weasley and Potter families are currently bringing the magic to Broadway eight shows at the Lyric Theatre in a sumptuous production loaded with mind-boggling special effects. Since it opened on Broadway, the 2-part plays have been playing to full Broadway audiences every night.

The Lightning Thief
Everyone’s favorite demigod is coming to Broadway! After an incredibly successful Off-Broadway run, followed by a national tour, The Lightning Thief is coming to the Longacre Theatre for a limited engagement. The Rob Rokicki musical introduces us to the son of Poseidon, Percy Jackson and his mythical motley crew from Camp Half Blood. The musical has quickly become  cult classic, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for Percy and friends.
