From R&B roots to the Broadway stage

Michelle Williams returns to Broadway. And, not the Michelle Williams that starred in Cabaret in 2015.

On Nov. 30, the Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child fame will take the stage at the Circle in the Square Theatre in Once On This Island. Williams will portray Erzulie, the goddess of love – first portrayed in the revival by Lea Salonga – until June 2, 2019.

According to Williams, “Taking on the role of Erzulie, the Goddess of Love, speaks to my heart. The musical is such a moving, inclusive, spiritual journey that is needed in these times. It feels just right to represent love.”

Williams made her Broadway debut in Aida in 2003 before adding credits like The Color Purple and Chicago to her theatrical resume.

With book and lyrics written by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, Once On This Island premiered on Broadway in 1990. Its Tony Award-winning revival, directed by Michael Arden, opened on December 3, 2017.
