Mother’s Day on Broadway: Show Guide

Category Broadway

|by Jenny Bustance |

Brunches in packed restaurants, bouquets of overpriced flowers, expensive trinkets: these are all standard Mother’s Day gifts. Sure, she will love whatever you give her, up to and including that card with the macaroni glued to the front. But the woman who took care of you when you were sick and kissed your wounds to make them better deserves something special to show her how much you care.

Shake things up a bit this year, and take Mom to Broadway, where the two of you can enjoy a spectacular production together. It’s not only a terrific gift, but a great way to create a new memory that you and your mom can always treasure.

Mamma Mia for Mother's Day

(L-R) Felicia Finley, Judy McLane and Lauren Cohn performing in MAMMA MIA!

Here are my top picks of Broadway performances to enjoy with Mom this Mother’s Day:

Mamma Mia!
This may be an obvious choice for the top pick for Mother’s Day, but not just because of the title. The show features a mother-daughter storyline about a young woman who is getting married and wants to track down her father. When she invites three candidates, her mother is reunited with all of her past loves. Not only that, but the show is comprised of popular ABBA hits, which will sure to have mom dancing in the aisles.

If you’re anything like me, you grew up watching the Disney classics, which meant that your mom spent years watching them, too. Get nostalgic with tickets to Disney’s Aladdin, the stage adaptation of the hugely popular animated feature. It tells the story of a poor street urchin who finds a magic lamp and makes a series of wishes to win the heart of a feisty princess.

Jersey Boys
When I took my mom to see Jersey Boys when it was on tour, she -- and most of the rest of the audience -- spent the majority of show singing along. This jukebox musical is made up of songs by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and includes such smash hits as “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”, and “December 1963 (Oh What A Night)”. Moms will be sure to enjoy a trip down memory lane with this spectacular Broadway show.
