What do you love about performing in Curvy Widow?
Nancy Opel:
It's amazing to star in a musical that is about a woman in her fifties who is embarking on a new love life. I get to be funny, outspoken, sing great songs and show vulnerability.

And most, if not all, of your costumes are from Bobby’s actual closet.
Nancy Opel:
They are all pretty, and really nice, and she doesn't seem to mind, so it's win win win!!

Can you take me back to Kansas City and share one of your earliest memories on stage?
Nancy Opel:
It was an original musical called Spring Fever at Meadowbrook Junior High. I was a singing teddy bear. I made the costume.

I read that one of your early dreams was to work with Harold Prince and Stephen Sondheim. And your first New York job was working with them in Evita and Sunday in the Park With George. What sticks out for you about working with them?
Nancy Opel:
They are human beings with all the feelings, though it is easy to just overlook that and make them icons only. It's better to realize that we are all sensitive people who are willing to put ego on the line. I learned to work hard and not cry about things too much.

You are also a talented photographer and voice coach. What inspired you to pursue those things?
Nancy Opel:
I started photography in pursuit of shooting my own head shots, which I do. I also love travel photography. Coaching is a blast because I love to share useful knowledge with my clients and watch them make breakthroughs.

If someone asked you, why should I see Curvy Widow, what would you say?
Nancy Opel:
It's very funny, very touching, and very short. 87 minutes!

What is your ideal day off?
Nancy Opel:
I have to make sure I get a decent amount of shut-eye. I wish I could say I love to see theater on my day off. Sometimes I do, sometimes it seems exhausting. I usually have a Chinese lesson and hang out with my poodle. I'm also a knitter, so that is great with a cup of coffee on the couch.
