‘And I am telling you,’ Dreamgirls IS going to Broadway

With each new season, shows open and close across Broadway, and fans start to wonder: what’s next? What will the landscape of Broadway look like in a season or two? Will it be dominated by movie adaptations, Jukebox Musicals, new original works or revivals? Sometimes it’s easier to tell when new works will be transferring to Broadway, but with revivals it’s more difficult to be sure if or when they’re coming. Here are three classic shows that may be returning sooner than you think.

Kiss Me, Kate is coming in hot with an already announced 2019 opening. The idea to revive this show came from a 2016 benefit concert starring Kelli O’Hara and Will Chase at Roundabout Theatre Company. Kiss Me, Kate is set to play Studio 54, and this limited engagement will run from February 14, 2019 through June 2, 2019. Kelli O’Hara and Will Chase are both set to reprise their roles from the 2016 concert and bring this Cole Porter classic back to Broadway.

The Secret Garden has recently become popular again, thanks to a 2016 benefit concert. The Lincoln Center concert featured Ben Platt, Ramin Karimloo, Sierra Boggess and original cast member Daisy Eagan. With a cast like that, it’s easy to see why producers would want to revive this show. Recently, there was a workshop of The Secret Garden starring Amber Iman, Sierra Boggess and Drew Gehling that is expected to transfer to Broadway soon. With some added material, a revised book and maybe even new songs, The Secret Garden could follow Once On This Island in reinventing a classic show for 21st-century audiences.

Dreamgirls is without a doubt the best of these upcoming shows. Featuring a legendary score, showstopping numbers and one of the most recognized musical theater songs of all time, “And I Am Telling You,” Dreamgirls is a classic. Fresh off an Olivier-winning run in London starring Glee’s Amber Riley, Dreamgirls is looking to return to Broadway in 2019. Amber lead the London production as Effie White in 2017. It’s unclear whether or not the Olivier Award-winning actor will return to the role for the Broadway transfer, but fans are counting the seconds till it returns. Dreamgirls is in the midst of auditioning its new cast, so there will likely be more announcements to come very soon.

With so many shows on track for a Broadway return, stay tuned to for announcements and updates! Be check out our list of Top Shows in September 2018.
