“Sugar, Butter, Flour”: The 5 Best Pies to Celebrate Pi Day in NYC

Category Broadway

|by ShowTickets Editors |

Dig into one of these slices before seeing ‘Waitress’ on Broadway

It’s Pi Day in New York City, and there are really only two NYC-approved ways to celebrate. The first is seeing the city’s hit pie-themed Broadway musical, Waitress, which will soon star Wicked alumna Shoshanna Bean opposite New Kids on the Block’s Joey McIntyre. Second, although the city is perhaps best known for pies of a pizza variety, it has plenty to offer in the dessert category, as well. We’re rounding up a few of the best slices to celebrate Pi Day – and we think Jenna, the expert pie inventor of Waitress, would certainly approve.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Pie – Little Pie Company
424 W. 43rd St.
Indulge in this bakery’s pie of the month – which, since it’s March, has been crafted especially for pie day. Chocolate ganache, peanut butter filling and a crackling crust, sprinkled with peanuts, make for a decadent slice.

Banana Cream Icebox Pie – Magnolia Bakery
1240 6th Ave.
Since this iconic sweets spot is known for its banana pudding, its icebox-style take on banana cream pie is sure to drive fans bananas as well. An added bonus: Magnolia’s icebox pies come in bar ($6), mini pie ($10) and 9” pie ($28) forms, depending on how hungry you’re feeling.

NY Sour Cherry Pie – Petee’s Pie Company
61 Delancey St.
This Lower East Side locale is known for its sophisticated fruit pies, which feature seasonal local produce and include sophisticated flavors ranging from Wild Maine Blueberry to Black Currant Streusel. Pay homage to Waitress on Broadway – and its sweet, but unlucky-in-love heroine Jenna – with a slice of NY Sour Cherry Pie.

Crack Pie – Momofuku Milk Bar
220 8th Ave.
Boasting a name nearly as irreverent as those concocted by Jenna in Waitress, Momofuku’s crack pie contains an addictive butter-based filled encased in an oat cookie-like crust – so it’s safe to assume you’ll be needing seconds.

Detention Ice Cream Pie – Ice & Vice
221 E. Broadway
This ice cream joint is serving up more than just scoops. Ice & Vice’s Detention Ice Cream Pie will encourage those who believe ice cream to be a mere accessory to pie consumption to think again. It starts with a fruity pebble crust filled with malted vanilla ice cream, and is topped with fruity pebble dust for an extra dose of nostalgia.
