Broadway has been waiting with bated breath all awards season, and the 2019 Tony Award winners are finally here. The 73rd Annual Tony Awards ceremony took place on Sunday, June 9th at Radio City Music Hall, and was hosted by James Corden. This year’s Tony nominees presented some highly competitive races, with few being able to predict what would happen on Broadway’s big night. In the Best Musical category, would a critical darling like Hadestown or The Prom triumph over slick movie adaptations of Tootsie and Beetlejuice, or would fan favorite jukebox musical Ain’t Too Proud prevail? The Best Play category was similarly competitive, featuring Olivier Award-winning British imports like The Ferryman and Ink alongside genre-bending American pieces Choir Boy (a play driven by gospel music), Gary (an irreverent sequel to Shakespeare’s bloodiest play) and What the Constitution Means to Me (which includes a live debate that changes each performance). Did your favorite show take home a coveted Tony statuette? Read on for the full list of this year’s Tony Award winners.
