Category Guide

|by Sarah Katz |

Before traveling to New York City to celebrate the autumnal temperatures, make certain you are dressed for the weather

Pumpkins, salted caramel, brisk air and warm drinks are just a few things that come to mind when we think about Fall in NYC. While you shouldn’t expect to see the changing colors of the leaves on the city  streets, New York’s many parks do come alive with vibrant foliage. The weather can be unpredictable this time of year, making packing a bit tricky. Here are the must-haves so that you are prepared for cool outdoor walks, festive parades and lots of sports games.

What is the temperature in September, October and November?
Fall is by definition a transitional time and the temperature in NYC fluctuates accordingly. With highs of 70 closer to summer and lows of 50 as winter approaches, be prepared for weather that is a bit chilly. The weather during this time of year is also known to be unpredictable, so there could be a whole slew of weather changes during your trip. Despite that, there are plenty of outdoor activities including football games, walks in central park and various parades, including the Village Halloween Parade and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

What shoes should I pack?
New York City is all about walking and taking in the world-famous sights that appear at every corner. So, make sure you bring a pair of comfortable shoes for your daily adventures and leave your sandals and heels at home. The weather does not yet require boots, but feel free to wear them if they are comfortable for walking.

Do I need layers?
Layers are always a good idea as temperatures oscillate daily during this time of year.  In addition, you will be at the mercy of the air-conditioning or heating of the various indoor attractions you visit, including Broadway shows and plenty of museums. You might also work up a sweat with all your outdoor exploring– especially seeing the foliage in Central Park, so having a light jacket that you can take off would be ideal.

What should my daily outfits be?
Jeans, warm sweaters, a light weatherproof jacket and a combination of long-sleeved and short-sleeved shirts are ideal for this type of weather. We recommend keeping your legs covered and, if you plan on wearing a dress, bring along some tights to keep you warm if the nights get chilly.

What kind of bag should I bring?
For every seasonm the bag necessary for traipsing through New York remains the same. Bring a light, small bag with a zipper that only has the necessities (wallet, room key, cellphone, identification) to ensure that you have the easiest time possible walking and are not weighed down by a heavy bag.

Is there anything else I need?
Always remember your cellphone and portable charger, as you will definitely be using your phone for plenty of pictures as well as looking up directions. A compact umbrella can also be a helpful addition in case you run into some unexpected showers.
