Watch your back: “Mean Girls’ is coming to Broadway

Mean Girls, the musical version of the 2004 cult classic film comedy written by Emmy winner Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) is strutting into Broadway in 2018. Previews begin March 12, 2018, at the August Wilson Theatre in advance of an April 8 opening.

Featuring a book by Fey, music by her husband, Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde), Mean Girls is directed by Tony winner Casey Nicholaw (Aladdin, The Book of Mormon) and produced by SNL’s Lorne Michaels, Stuart Thompson, and Paramount Pictures. The story follows the plot of the film with teenaged Cady returning to the US after growing up on the African savannah and now having to deal with a different type of wildlife – The Plastics, a cutthroat clique in her new high school headed by the charming but devious Regina George. When Cady schemes to topple Regina from her perch, she learns a queen bee can sting. Lindsay Lohan, Rachael McAdams and Amanda Seyfried starred in the movie. The show will feature Erika Henningsen (Les Miserables) as Cady, Taylor Louderman (Bring It On, Kinky Boots) as the manipulative Regina, Ashley Park (Sunday in the Park with George, The King and I) as neurotic Gretchen, Kate Rockwell (Rock of Ages) as dim-bulb Karen and Barret Wilbert Weed (Heathers: The Musical) as Goth girl Janis. Fey has won nine Emmys (three for writing and acting for Saturday Night Live and six for writing, producing and acting on 30 Rock). She has also appeared in such films as Baby Mama, Date Night, Admissions, Sisters and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Mean Girls is her Broadway debut as a writer.
