Stars and the City: Tituss Burgess’ New York

Category Broadway

|by Jeryl Brunner |

Tituss Burgess was recently nominated for an Emmy Award, playing lovable Titus Andromedon in the irresistible Netflix comedy series 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.' He also has his own Pinot Noir, Pinot by Tituss, made in Santa Barbara County

The first show I saw in New York was Ragtime — my first Broadway show. I had never been to New York. I had never been on a plane. I was still in college at The University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. I don’t know that I even thought I would ever move here, let alone do what I’m doing. I saw about seven show in a week: RagtimeYou’re a Good Man, Charlie BrownThe Civil War, which I loved.  But when I got off that plane, it truly was love at first sight. I knew every stranger. We were family.

What do you love about New York City?
1. I love to eat out. My new favorite restaurant is Cookshop. It’s so good. So good. It’s farm to table. And you can taste the difference.

2. I love to roam the West Village. It is so peaceful. And this is going to sound cheesy, but it is where I feel my community’s energy vibrate at the highest frequency.

3. I love to see Broadway shows. I feel most at home seeing theater. I don’t have to guess about where I stand in the world.  You know the expression, seeing eye to eye? When I see theater,  we see eye to eye. And it is the most reciprocity that I’ve ever experienced as a human being.
