Bring the whole crew to Broadway!

The holiday season is a perfect time to take the whole family to see a Broadway or Off-Broadway show. But it’s important to find the right production. Adults might get bored with kiddie shows, and the little ones won’t cotton to material that flies over their heads. So for those seeking the perfect blend of sophistication and silliness, here are the top five family shows to see now in NYC:

SpongeBob SquarePants
Everybody’s favorite square submarine creature is finally on Broadway after a long-running Nickelodeon cartoon series and two feature films. The happy-go-lucky SpongeBob and his pals Sandy the Squirrel and Patrick Starfish are determined to save their beloved underwater town of Bikini Bottom from being destroyed by a volcano. But the scheming Plankton and his computer wife Karen are plotting to take advantage of the dire situation. This delightfully silly romp has colorful sets and costumes and an exciting score with songs by such pop icons as David Bowie, The Flaming Lips, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Aerosmith and They Might Be Giants.

Disney continues to bring its magical animated features to life on Broadway. Aladdin flew into the New Amsterdam in 2014 and has been delighting audiences ever since. Filled with breathtaking special effects, songs from the film (such as “A Whole New World”), new tunes and a hilarious genie, this dazzling production retells the legendary story of the poor boy who finds a magic lamp.

For the Harry Potter fan of any age. This Off-Broadway spoof of everyone’s favorite wizard academy is subtitled Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic & Magic. Three friends – not the famous Harry, Ron and Hermione – are just trying to get through the mystical learning years but are beset by a brace of misadventures.

School of Rock
Kids and parents alike will love this funky celebration of rock, romance, heavy metal and letting your freak flag fly. Based on the 2003 film comedy, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s latest hit focuses on wanna-be front man Dewey Finn who poses as a substitute teacher at a ritzy Manhattan private school, only to find his band in his class. The pint-sized cast members play all their own instruments. The book by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey) is chock full of family-friendly humor with just enough rock spiciness to keep the adults interested.

Blue Man Group
Still going strong since it first opened at the Astor Place Theater in 1991, this combination rock concert, dance party, comedy show and sensory experience remains a perfect family treat. Three blue-faced performers bang on drums, splash paint, twist plastic tubing into fantastic shapes and instruments, and cover the audience in toilet paper. Kids will love the goofy antics and parents will get a kick out of the off-the-wall, imaginative staging.
