Don Giovanni, an opera performing at the New York Met this season, is the story of a man who cannot control his cravings for women. After trying to seduce the Commendatore’s daughter and being caught, he gets into a fight with the Commendatore and kills him. From that point on, Donna Anna and her betrothed, Don Ottavio, swear that they will avenge her father’s death. Don Giovanni is unfazed by these developments and continues to try to seduce women, but his antics eventually catch up with him. In the last act of the opera, the statue of the late Commendatore warns Giovanni that he won’t be laughing much longer, and after he refuses to apologize and change his life, he perishes.
