In the midst of the Great Depression, the residents of a Minnesota boarding house are weathering the economic environment about as well as can be expected. There’s Nick Laine, the house’s broke proprietor, whose wife Elizabeth suffers from apparent delusions and fits of violence. Their son Gene, who dreams of being a writer, sees his childhood sweetheart leave him for a richer man. The Laines’ adopted daughter, Marianne, is pregnant and unwilling to divulge the father’s identity, but Nick has plans of marrying her off to local widower Mr. Perry. The Burke family guards secrets about their past carefully, and Mrs. Neilsen is anxiously awaiting payout from her late husband’s estate. Dr. Walker, the seemingly clairvoyant narrator, may not be so clear-eyed as he appears.

The trials and tribulations of this unlikely lot are set to the poignant tunes of Bob Dylan, adding lush melodic underscoring to the emotional highs and lows playing out onstage. From a heartbreaking re-imagining of “I Want You” as a duet between two parted lovers to a triumphant staging of “Like a Rolling Stone” and even a revivalist take on “Duquesne Whistle,” Girl From the North Country offers something unexpected for Dylan fans of many different eras. Why Go?

Best Known For:
A heartrending fusion of mood and melody that blends some of Dylan’s finest songs with the playwrighting craft of Conor McPherson.

Why Go:
Much has been said about Girl From the North Country’s transcendence of the jukebox musical format, so much so that it has even been characterized as a totally new type of artist catalog-based musical. Add to that the fact that McPherson, who is both an Olivier Award Winner and a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award Winner, was personally invited by Dylan’s management to craft a theatre piece around the beloved artist’s work, and you’ve got yourself a dynamite fusion of theatrical and songwriting craftsmanship that shouldn’t be missed.
