Overview

Tootsie, the Oscar-winning 1982 hit film, comes to the Broadway stage in a riotous new musical adaptation. Michael Dorsey is a brilliant but difficult actor who switches genders to become Dorothy Michaels for the role of a lifetime and learns a lot more than he bargained for about men, women, respect and relationships. Michael is played by Tony nominee Santino Fontana (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella) in a gender-bending, riotous performance. Also in the cast are Tony winner Michael McGrath (Nice Work If You Can Get It), Sarah Stiles (Hand to God), Reg Rogers (Present Laughter), Julie Halston (You Can’t Take It With You), Lili Cooper (SpongeBob SquarePants), John Behlmann (Significant Other), and Andy Grotelueschen (Cyrano de Bergerac). The original score is by Tony Award-winner David Yazbek (The Bands Visit, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), with a book by Robert Horn (13; Dame Edna, Back with a Vengeance), choreography by Tony Award nominee Denis Jones (Holiday Inn, Honeymoon in Vegas), and musical direction by Andrea Grody (The Bands Visit). Eight-time Tony Award nominee and Olivier Award winner Scott Ellis (She Loves Me, On the Twentieth Century) directs. Variety calls it a “bouncy new musical” and the Chicago Tribune hailed its “comic characters [which are] as outlandishly successful as any since The Producers.”

WhyGo?

Best Known For:
The film Tootsie was nominated for 10 Oscars and won for Jessica Lange’s supporting performance. Dustin Hoffman as Michael/Dorothy was nominated for Best Actor and won the National Society of Film Critics award.

Tootsie tells the story of a talented but difficult actor who struggles to find work until an audacious, desperate stunt lands him the role of a lifetime. This is not just a retread of the movie. This riotous stage version takes it a notch up from the film by transporting the setting from a soap opera to contemporary Broadway musical, allowing for plenty of backstage action and numbers.
