Waitress: About the Creative Team

Women have long had an important influence on sights, songs, and look of Broadway, but the crowd-pleasing musical, Waitress, has taken women’s impact on Broadway to a whole new level. In fact, the all-female creative team made history when in debuted on Broadway in 2016 to rave reviews. All four of the top creative roles are held by women, an accomplishment that makes it the very first Broadway shows to achieve this honor.

The toe-tapping score and lyrics were written by Grammy Award winner Sara Bareilles, whose work on Waitress earned her a Tony nomination for Best Musical and Best Original Score. But that’s just the beginning of the women-influence on Waitress! The choreography was conceived by Lorin Latarro, an experienced Broadway choreographer and dancer who has toured the world with a number of prominent companies. Diane Paulus, the director of Waitress, has earned accolades as the artistic director of the American Repertory Theater and is currently working on a rock musical based on Alanis Morissette’s albums Jagged Little Pill. The bookwriter, who develops the plot and story’s structure, was written by Jessie Nelson who instilled feminist themes throughout the story.

These four women all add up to a historic creative team, the likes of which Broadway has never seen before. The all-female creative team behind this Broadway smash hit has broken through in a male-dominated industry to inspire a whole new generation of writers, composers, and directors.

With only a small fraction of women holding creative rolls in Broadway shows (1 in 10 composers, authors, and directors according to Playbill Vault), Waitress is helping to shatter the glass ceiling that has hovered over the theater district for decades. Broadway still has a long way to go, but Waitress proves that creative teams don’t always have to look like they have in the past.
